Environmental NGOs call Administrations coordinated and forceful action to prevent fires from the banks of the Segura (15/04/2016)

Environmental organizations have turned to various authorities to order a coordinated and forceful to stop the fires that have hit the banks of the Segura, particularly in passing through Cieza and Abarán performance.

Entities remember that fire is the main cause of degradation of the banks, favoring invasions cane to the detriment of the riparian forest.

In addition, they fire threatening the various initiatives recovery banks that are being developed in the region (or in this stretch of river in the upper valley).

Rio Rie, EPlan, Ecologists in Action and ASEAN has sent a letter to the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, the City of Cieza and to the Office of Environment and SEPRONA warning of the effects negative continuous fire with the banks of the River Segura, especially as it passes through the town of Cieza.

These fires affect Hydraulic Public Domain, ie to public land.

Among the negative environmental effects of fire, is the proliferation of invasive alien species such as cane (Arundo donax,) which is favored by the removal of competition to the detriment of native species.

According to the organizations, the fire has become one of the main elements of degradation of the banks affecting valuable environmental values ​​as habitats of Community interest and endangered species, according to regional regulations, as in the case of otter (Lutra Lutra, Law 7/95) or ash (Fraxinus angustifolia, Decree 50/2003).

In addition, repeated fires can destroy the efforts made by various public agencies and NGOs to advance the recovery of natural ecosystems.

Specifically, several volunteer projects with regional, national and European support have been carried out on the affected environment for over a decade.

Currently in the area they are developing two European projects under the LIFE program (Ripisilvanatura and SEGURARIVERLINK) whose goals may be compromised by the frequency and recurrence of fires, assuming a major loss of public funds.

For all these reasons, organizations are calling for a strong and coordinated intervention by the government to proceed with extreme control tasks, monitoring and fire prevention of the banks.

They also consider necessary to intensify efforts to identify those responsible for the fire that occurred to date and debug the corresponding responsibilities in the area concerned.
