IU-Green leads back to the plenary debate on the use and dangers of fracking in the basin of the Segura River (03/09/2014)

In the Segura river basin have been granted to date and four research permits for exploration and eventual exploitation of gas trapped in deep rocks using fracking known as hydraulic fracturing, art.

Cieza is one of the most affected municipalities, with thousands of acres included within the Leo project.

It is a technique that is at the center of a controversy worldwide for potential risks to health and the environment: chemical contamination of aquifers and, from it, surface water, air pollution, the destruction of ecosystems and landscapes and the possibility of causing earthquakes in areas with geological activity are some of the most frequently reported.

It is not the first time that IU-Green leads the plenary debate on the use of fracking in our environment.

In the year 2013, this group already raised in Parliament for discussion, two proposals were rejected by the votes of the majority of the Popular Party.

The first one, in June, intended Cieza institutional statement as "free town of fracking," as had been done by then other municipalities in the region, notably the City Council of the city of Murcia.

In the second, the call for a consultation to the public on the use of this technique in the municipality of Cieza requested.

More than a year later, circumstances have changed sufficiently to warrant a new proposal for institutional position against this gas extraction technique, whose environmental and social risks are becoming ever clearer.

This is at least the opinion of the group of IU-Greens in the city of Cieza;

a new motion to be debated at the next regular plenary, the undersigned Councillor, José Eduardo Illueca, states that "there have been notable advances in the knowledge of this technique for citizenship and awareness against the risks, due in largely to the work platforms and environmental groups and citizens, as Segura Basin Platform Free fracking ".

Changes are reflected mainly in the unequivocal position of the regulatory boards designations of origin of Jumilla and Yecla, as well as associations of winemakers Altiplano, which have resulted in a dramatic shift in the position of the City Yecla, ruled by the PP, which has recently unanimously approved a motion rejecting the fracking.

Following these important developments, the Platform "Segura Basin Royalty Fracking" has proposed, in a statement to the media, the formation of an institutional front, where they would join the councils who wanted to oppose the exploitation of gas shale in the region of Murcia.

According Illueca, "the city of Cieza must rectify its previous position and join this tide, even leading the process, as it did during the tubing del Segura".

The occasion calls for it and hope ciezanos ecosocialistas "enough high-mindedness of all components of the Plenary to lead us to agree on the willingness to take on this role."

If the House approves the text proposed by IU-Greens, the City of Cieza manifest "their opposition to the use of the techniques of fracking in the town of Cieza and the Segura river basin, on the risks to health may involve public, the environment and agriculture in this area "and would adhere" to the proposed Basin Platform Free Safe Fracking to promote a Pact Regional Councils Against Fracking "with a commitment to" start immediately contacts with other municipalities facing the establishment of a possible institutional front. "

The commitment is also extended to promote "information and discussion within the group of farmers on the use of fracking in the basin and their potential environmental, economic and social impact."
