Youth in Europe and Asia participate in archaeological fieldwork in Cieza (30/07/2008)

The director of the Institute for Youth Veronica Lopez accompanied by Deputy Mayor of Cieza, Joaquin Ruiz, and the councilman of Youth Teodoro Garcia visited the young people participating in the International Labor Camp Archaeology Cieza, which this year celebrates its sixth edition.

For 15 days a group of 21 youths, aged between 18 and 26 years old do archaeological work in the old Arab city Siyâsa Medina.

Volunteers from different countries in Europe and Asia: 9 Spain (1 de Andalucía, Castilla la Mancha 2, 2, Madrid, 2 de Murcia, Valencia 2), 4 France, 3 in South Korea, 2 Poland, 1 from Germany, and 2 in Lithuania.

The field work began on July 27 and runs through Aug. 10.

Archaeological excavations focus on the homes of ancient Islamic Siyâsa Medina, located on the right bank of the river Segura, in the town of Cieza.

This is an important site, both in size and quality of their findings.

The castle, after the Islamic depopulation in 1266, continued to be occupied, alternatively, by Castilian and Aragonese to their ultimate destruction in 1457, carried out by order of the Castilian King Henry IV.

The volunteers will work in archaeological excavation in the road system in the Medina area Siyâsa, stratigraphic record in standard chips, plants and sections drawings, archaeological photography and insertion of the structures exposed in the general topography of the site and classification and inventory work archaeological material.

Along with the archaeological activities young people participate in other activities organized as: Guided tours to historic and natural sites Cieza area (Cave and Canyon Serreta Almadenes) fall tourist sailing kayak and raft on the River Rustic Segura, caving, hiking, evenings, open air cinema 'Magic Cinema Week', Arabic henna workshops, drumming, massage, music festivals and visit the city of Murcia, the beaches of Mar Menor and Cartagena.

During this period, volunteers stay at the Youth Hostel of Cieza, located in place 'The Straits', next to the Water Museum' Theodore Mill. "
