The deputy of the Socialist Parliamentary Group Yolanda Fernández Sánchez has demanded in the Commission of Territorial Policy the elaboration and implementation of a Plan of prevention, conservation and promotion of the Olmeda del Maripinar de Cieza, in collaboration with the City Council of this town.
This initiative has been unanimously supported by all the parliamentary groups in the Commission on Territorial Policy, Environment, Agriculture and Water.
Yolanda Fernández indicated that the Maripinar's waterfall is one of the most singular and outstanding places of our geography.
It is located on a fluvial plain in the middle of the Segura orchard, on the road between Cieza and Mula.
It has 43 centennial specimens and is considered the most important in Spain and one of the best in Europe.
The Socialist deputy noted that the droughts of recent years, coupled with heat waves, have favored the proliferation of a small green beetle (galeruca elm) that feeds on the leaves of elms and has put in an alarming situation the common elm tree formation (ulmus minor).
"The loss of leaves and the breaking of several thick branches also pose an obvious risk to the safety of neighbors, pedestrians and vehicles."
After the approval by the Regional Assembly of the Law 14/2016, of November 7, of Monumental Arboreal Heritage of the Region of Murcia, "we have a regulation that recognizes, preserves and protects the monumental arboreal heritage, among which is the Maripinar olive grove and that the regional government itself is not complying. "
Yolanda Fernández added that "because of its botanical characteristics of monumentality or extraordinary circumstances of age, bearing or other types of historical, cultural, scenic, scientific, recreational or environmental events, it deserves protection and conservation."
Therefore, it considers that it is time to work jointly among the administrations involved in the field of their competences, to carry out all the actions of improvement in the face of the restoration and maintenance of these trees.
"In addition to the phytosanitary treatments, it is necessary to carry out a biomechanical study of this olive grove, as it has been claimed by the Socialist Government Team of the City of Cieza since 2015," he concluded.
