The spokesman of the Socialist Parliamentary Group Joaquín López Pagán, the deputy, Jesús Navarro, and the mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, celebrate the unanimous support received by the Assembly for the peach of Cieza to reach its protection through the Geographical Indicator of the Product ( IGP).
López Pagán stressed that the peach sector of Cieza has known in the last decade to produce a quality product, with high-tech agricultural innovations.
"We are talking about the PSOE's commitment to sustainable economic development, for the quality products of the Region, in this specific case, for the Cieza peach."
The Vega Alta del Segura is one of the main producing areas of stone fruit, being Cieza the first municipality of Spain in extension dedicated to stone fruit, with 13,000 hectares and a production of 200,000 tons of peach.
The protected geographical designation (IGP) for the ciezano peach has its justification for its unique qualities and for being a high quality product.
Obtaining said figure will favor differentiation and competition in the main national and international markets.
This motion, defended in the Plenary of the Assembly by the socialist deputy Jesus Navarro, is promoted by the mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, and his government team, after maintaining a permanent dialogue with farmers in the area and bet decidedly for this product, which has made Cieza the largest peach producer in Europe.
López Pagán explained that "the technological improvement and innovation of the varieties of the fruit have led to an increase in production and have allowed to diversify the offer significantly".
He thanked the support of all the parliamentary groups for this initiative, "which marks the beginning of a dossier and we hope that it will soon become a reality and Cieza peaches have their seal of quality, which is what the farmers pursue. news and it is also a matter of Region ".
López Pagán added that the socialist government of Cieza is making good on its tourism policy, knowing how to take advantage of its potential as the flowering of fruit trees, a colorful picture full of contrasts that flood the ciezanos fields and marks the beginning of the harvest season of its fruit trees, where peach trees predominate.

For his part, the mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, thanked the work of the Socialist Parliamentary Group and the unanimous support of the Assembly.
He indicated that from the City Council of Cieza are working in coordination with the peach sector and with the collaboration of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, through the research work on post-harvest study of local varieties.
Pascual Lucas stated that the objective is for the European Union to register the peach tree in the Register of Denominations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications, which will provide producers with adequate instruments to better identify and promote the product, as well as protect it from unfair practices .
Lucas noted that "this recognition will allow us to have a specific identification, which will guarantee the uniqueness of the origin and the guarantee of quality".
