The favorable environmental report: a step back in the fight against "fracking"
The recent publication in the Official State Gazette of the environmental report favorable to seismic surveys of the "Leo" Project, one of the four that foresee the future use of hydraulic fracturing or fracking techniques in the northwest of the Region of Murcia , has re-triggered all the alarms.
The declarations of many municipalities and the approval of a regional law that hinders the processing of permits have not been enough to dispel the shadows that the "fracking" extends over the region of Murcia and its northern regions.
This news reminds us, with harshness, that three projects already granted and a fourth in progress continue forward, despite the clear and express opposition of City Councils, environmental associations, farmers and political parties in the affected areas.
The Ministry for the Ecological Transition has left a clear path for companies holding the "Leo" Project to use seismic methods to detect hydrocarbons, without the need for an ordinary environmental declaration.
It is a decision that we regret since Podemos and that has not taken into account a fundamental aspect: that it does not make sense to evaluate in isolation the impact of the prospecting method if this is oriented to a future extraction by hydraulic fracturing.
As Ecologists in Action has pointed out, a rigorous environmental assessment should have considered the different activities planned in the "Leo" Project as a whole, and not just seismic prospecting.
Other factors that aggravate the environmental risks are the possible cumulative effect of the other projects granted or in process, the proximity of all of them to different protected areas and the possible affectation of ground and surface water by the possible surveys that would be carried out in if the seismic survey produced a positive result.
Risk of contamination of the waters of the Sinclinal and Segura River
In this sense, it must be remembered that the area delimited in the "Leo" Project extends to a large extent over the aquifer of the Calasparra Syncline, which is connected to the Segura River, so that a possible episode of pollution would affect this course fluvial and the volumes of the Tajo-Segura that circulate through it.
Not to mention that the waters of the syncline are also used as irrigation waters.
The threat does not only have an environmental dimension, therefore, but also an economic and public health dimension.
It's time to raise your voice and renew the fight
It is not enough to declare Cieza territory free of "fracking".
You have to make it really be.
And the situation does not look good, because the concessionaire companies go ahead with their plans and the State Administration does not show a clear will of opposition;
On the contrary, it is collaborative.
And we can not forget that projects such as "Leo", with actions planned in different communities, are the responsibility of the State and not of the autonomous communities.
It should not matter the political color of the administrations when it comes to claiming the future of our territory and its inhabitants.
It is necessary to oppose with all the forces to the threat, now renewed, of the "fracking" in the northwest of the region.
The ciezana society, with its City Council at the head, and all the municipal political forces have to raise their voices and shout NO !, and do it as soon as possible and with maximum publicity.
In Podemos-Cieza we have it clear.
