The artisan market, better in the Corner of the Convent (11/11/2019)

In Cieza, manual work is still fully valid, satisfying the needs and tastes of people.

The people have not abandoned their manual workers, their modest creators and their artists.

They are artisans faithful to their roots and attached to the land.

It was the case of Gregorio Ortega Lucas (Cieza, 1933-2019), who in life was named honorary craftsman by the General Directorate of Commerce and Crafts.

In this way a debt of gratitude was paid to this model of esparto craftsman.

The craft market meets the traditional Sunday meeting, but from now on in its new location of the Corner of the Convent and without the presence of Don Gregorio, as he is reminded.

The premiere at the corner of the Convent of the artisan market, the new impulse of the Department of Crafts, generated a real interest in the town.

The vicinity of the Municipal Library Salmerón Father, where a total of eighteen seats were installed, were visited on Sunday morning by hundreds of neighbors, who wanted to support with their purchases the relocation of the popular market.

And it is that the influx of an unconditional public was noticed - those who come month after month whatever happens - in search of some homemade product, in sausages, natural bread, cheeses, jams, honey or typical sweets, or in all kinds of details in wood, fabric or esparto to decorate the home with style.

Always with innovation as an objective, the City Council of Cieza and the artisans work hand in hand in a project that seeks to improve the experience of going to a market, thanks to the family treatment and the quality of the products.

Faithful to his Sunday appointment with crafts, and as on previous occasions, associations and entities such as New Foundation Los Albares, Local Board of the AECC or the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of Medinaceli were also present.

Between buying and buying, the topic of conversation yesterday in the Corner of the Convent revolved around the arrival of the cold.

For the rest, the morning passed with the coming and going of visitors who took advantage of the last day of the XI Fair Outlet to get a great offer.

A very attractive offer and the best way to provide a grain of sand so that artisans can continue with their much needed work in these uncertain times.

An opening, however, that had a bittersweet taste due to the absence of Gregorio Ortega Lucas, (Cieza, 1933-2019), craftsman of the esparto, who died last May.

"We are very sorry and we are going to miss him a lot. He was a reference in this market and was always aware of all of us. I am sure he is going to lend us a hand, even if he is not there," said a craftsman.

He left as he lived, discreetly, at the end of the craft market season, where he became a constant presence.

Ortega was the main reference in this field for craftsmen of several generations.

Fruit of his long experience are the appointment of honorary craftsman by the General Directorate of Commerce and Crafts, thanks to his good work, professionalism and recovery of manual crafts.

He also won the Honorary Prize for Handicrafts granted by Ruralmur in 2015. The regional handicraft sector received recognition with great satisfaction.

He meant crafts because he loved her more than anything in the world.

Crowded behind his post full of baskets, carrycot and esparto backpacks, he distributed greetings and kind words to his neighbors.

All your flea market partners will always remember the essentials of your exquisite personality.
