Ecologists in Action denounces that agricultural burning remains an unsolved problem in Cieza, where, in recent days, they explain, several episodes of pollution caused by this practice have been re-registered.
They include the one that took place on December 26, when the smoke generated by the burning of stubble and pruning, affected for several hours in neighborhoods of the northern access of Cieza such as La Horta, Cabezo de la Fuensantilla or the Jover neighborhood, where "The air became practically irrespirable at some times," they explain.
The environmental organization laments the lack of monitoring and control by the administration of practices that do not stop, even "when it is evident that they directly affect the population, as happened on December 26," they lament.
They add that the compliance with the basic recommendations aimed at protecting air quality and health that are established in the Joint Resolution issued in March 2019, by the Directorates General for Environment and Mar Menor, Public Health and Addictions , Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture, and Natural Environment, in relation to burning practices in the agricultural sector. Ecologists in Action recalls that “the burning of stubble and agricultural remains has harmful effects on the health of the population that breathes the air contaminated by the smoke that is generated” and that it is a health problem that must be resolved “as they have been claiming from the From the General Directorate of Public Health repeatedly ”.
Therefore, they demand that the city council and the Community adopt control and surveillance measures to prevent and avoid episodes such as those that have occurred in recent days in Cieza.
