Ecologists in Action provides new documentation to the Ombudsman, and denounces that the prohibition does not apply, nor the recommendations of the health authorities on the need to avoid these practices.
The Ombudsman has requested [1] the City Council of Cieza and the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment of the Region of Murcia to report on the application of the Joint Resolution [2] prohibiting the burning of bullets of straw against frost, and in which there are also severe restrictions on the use of other fuels, in order to protect the health of the population.
This action by the Ombudsman responds to the new documentation submitted by Ecologists in Action, and in which the permissiveness of these administrations is denounced in the face of anti-frost burns despite their prohibition, and the recommendations of the health authorities regional to prevent such practices, due to the high risk to the health of the population.
The environmental organization explains that, after the approval of the joint Resolution by several General Directorates through which these practices are prohibited, neither the city council nor the Autonomous Community, they seem to adopt any control or inspection measure to prevent the continuation of burning They generate kilometric toxic clouds, and they trigger atmospheric pollution levels at extremely high values for hours.
The result is that this type of burning (pressed straw bales, paraffin boats or fuel stoves) have continued to be carried out in some farms of the Vega Alta with total normality during 2019, causing serious episodes of contamination.
In fact, they explain, "on March 28, 2019, just one week after the publication in the BORM that these practices were prohibited, one of the most serious episodes of recent years was recorded in Cieza."
So from the environmental organization, they finally point out, they fear that this year they will register again shortly (February and March) burns massive frost despite the current ban.
