Saorín warns of "the damaging effects of gambling" (23/09/2020)

| The Consumption Councilor of the City Council of Cieza celebrates the agreement between the Government and the autonomous communities to connect their self-ban records in order to protect people with gambling disorders | This Monday, summoned by the Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzón, the Gambling Policy Council, the equivalent of the sectoral commissions that exist in other ministries, met to address, together with the autonomous communities, the problem of betting houses and with the aim of "starting a common work" to address "a shared model in the prevention of the harmful effects of gambling" with the regional governments, which are those that have the competences in the field of face-to-face gambling.

This is the first meeting of this body since 2018.In a press release, the Councilor for Consumption of the City Council of Cieza, Francisco Saorín, after describing the call and the meeting as positive, has shown his satisfaction with the fact that the Government and autonomous communities are moving towards a total coordination in the protection of people with gambling disorder and their families.

The agreement reached has had the support of all the Autonomous Communities, except for the vote against Catalonia and the abstentions of the Basque Country and the Valencian Community.Likewise, the councilor has stressed that, "when a person detects his addiction to gambling, one of the protection measures that exist in Spain is the registration in a self-prohibited registry, which prevents him from accessing this activity.

high, the administration and companies prevent access to rooms or online portals where you can bet.

People who want to protect themselves and their families from the devastating effects of compulsive action can voluntarily enroll in this database.

"Currently there is a state registry and each autonomous community has its own.

The state registry -which depends on the Ministry of Consumption- prevents access to online gambling, while, if a person registers in their community, their ability to play in those physical gambling establishments regulated by the Autonomous Communities will be restricted.Agreements between the Government and the CCAAFor protection purposes, the interdiction registers will function as a single database.

The coordination will be carried out through an agenda of close collaboration between the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the autonomous communities, which will have until January 2021 to find the best connection formula.

So that all registers are interconnected, the Government of Spain will sign agreements with the Autonomous Communities throughout the next year. The Councilor for Consumption, Francisco Saorín, has said that simplifying the self-prohibition procedures "will make life easier for many families overwhelmed by the problem of gambling, especially the most vulnerable." "We put people ahead and guarantee their health and protection, simplifying bureaucratic obstacles," Saorín said, adding that "people without displacement difficulties will be favored by interconnection."Finally, Saorín has reported that the state registry, which does not include the CCAA listings and which only has the capacity to restrict access to online gambling, currently has 54,294 registered.

In 2019, 9,143 new people were registered, 43% more than in 2018.

The percentage of registered people under 25 years of age has skyrocketed in recent years: in 2012 they represented 11% of the total registered and in 2019 they amounted to 22% .
