The City Council of Cieza is one of the eleven municipalities in the Region of Murcia that, according to municipal sources, "is fortunate to host prehistoric cave paintings, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
The Council of Europe, aware of their immense cultural value places, has instituted October 9 as European Rock Art Day, promoting the celebration and visibility of the event ".According to a statement, "it has the highest concentration of rock art in our region, with about twenty caves and shelters concentrated, most of them in the Almadenes Canyon, but also in the Sierra de Ascoy and in the Atalaya.
The cave of La Serreta and Los Grajos shelters are also open to visitors, becoming one of the many reasons to visit us.
We are also the only Murcian municipality with Paleolithic art, with the Arco, Jorge and Cabras caves, and we have one of the six places of the region that are part of a cultural route promoted by the Council of Europe and that has as a common thread precisely not only rock art, but that this is of special singularity ".The press release adds that these eleven Murcian municipalities "join this commemoration with this simple initiative, promoted by the Federation of Municipalities, the University of Murcia and the Friends of Rock Art association, which makes visible our heritage and the fact that we Like other European regions, we have the privilege of being part of this Cave Territory.
Images of this initiative will be uploaded to a Council of Europe website from all these municipalities, making our municipality known and its inclusion in this select group of landscapes with rock art ".
