Last Wednesday, members of the platform attended a meeting called by representatives of the Cieza city council to discuss various issues regarding macro-farms.
During the meeting, a representation of the platform focused on the entrance to publicly show their rejection of these facilities. The Salvemos Nuestra Tierra-No a las macrogranjas platform met with councilors Antonio Moya, Francisco Saorín and Antonio Ignacio Martínez Real to gather information on the administrative status of the modification of the general plan and to send a series of requests prepared by the group of neighbors of Cieza.Initially, the platform expressed the anger and concern of the citizens about the incomprehensible delay in the initial approval of the modification of the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) as well as the lack of coordination between the councilors and the mayor in relation to statements public in the media and in meetings with neighbors since in the last two months, the messages from the institution have been contradictory, logically causing some indignation and anger among the population. The councilors reiterated their political commitment to prevent the installation of these macro-farms, recalling the steps they have taken since several license applications were submitted in 2018.
At this point, the platform requested that the city council, as a matter of urgency, request the Autonomous Community (CARM) more diligence with the resolution of the modification of the PGOU.
They also regretted that "since the proposal to modify the PGOU was sent to the CARM in April 2019, neither the Ministries have resolved in time nor has the city council been interested in the administrative progress of the modification, giving rise between them to that the term of suspension of the licenses expires and the promoters of these have claimed their granting ".The city council acquired the commitment to request the CARM as well as the convocation of an extraordinary plenary session as soon as the resolution has entered. In relation to the text of the modification of the PGOU, the representatives of the platform urged to carry out a simulation in planimetry of the document in order to know exactly the degree of coverage / protection offered by said modification, a request that was collected by the councilors .On the other hand, the platform alerted the macro-farm project in the Cañada del Judío (Jumilla tm), in the so-called Finca La Solana, an operation that plans to occupy more than 400 hectares of surface for the production and rearing cycle of piglets, with volumes of 8,000 breeders and 36,000 piglets.
And they warned about the devastating impacts of these facilities in Cieza due to natural drainage since "just 2 kilometers from the farm where the suckling pig will be located, the Rambla del Judío rises to the surface, directly connected to the Segura river, and that it is also on the most important aquifer in the Segura basin, the so-called 'Calasparra Synclinal Underground Water Body'.At this point, the councilors proposed promoting a meeting of the municipalities of Cieza and Jumilla with representatives of the platforms of both towns to discuss the situation.
On the part of the collective, public representatives were urged to study the tools that the city council can use to argue against this project and hinder its development, requesting that "technical reports be prepared based on the environmental values ??Llanos de Picarcho, impacts on surface and groundwater, impacts on the agricultural economic activity of the region and on potential development / tourist use, etc ...
".Finally, from the platform the meeting was positively valued due to the specific commitments acquired by the Cieza city council but they warn "time plays against us, then we are not going to take our eyes off the CARM or the city council while the proliferation of these disturbing intensive livestock projects are a threat in our territory and in neighboring regions ".
