in person and until 24:00 'online' at this link. The Esparto Museum of Cieza opened its doors on December 31, 2000, when the century in which it was born was expiring, reaching its fullness and later decaying -almost disappearing- an industry, that of esparto, which became a landmark identity of the town of Cieza. Its creation was the result of a popular initiative promoted and coordinated by the Association Club Atalaya / Ateneo de la Villa de Cieza ("Común Atalayar"), in whose headquarters the Museum was located.
To this end, they counted on the essential contribution of the town's residents, who donated tools and machinery, household goods and utensils, old photographs and documents ...
and, most preciously, they bequeathed their oral memory with the secrets of the trade and evocations of experiences , troubles and solidarity struggles of some very hard years.
It was a project to recover the industrial heritage and the working history of the esparto workers in Cieza. The new facilities of the Museum, which occupy a new building also within the physical space of the association, were inaugurated on August 17, 2013, having received a subsidy within the framework of the Leader program of the European Union. Since its inauguration, the Museum has received tens of thousands of visitors from numerous places in the region, Spain and the world, maintaining a cultural service to residents and travelers who come to Cieza, especially groups of schoolchildren (all schools of the town arrange free guided tours), students, pensioners and tourists in general and offering live spinning demonstrations by former esparteros.
