The Councilor for Health and Public Health of the City Council of Cieza is based on a report, approved by the Public Health Commission and which collects scientific evidence, which highlights the effects on health in the short and long term. The Ministry of Health, through the Public Health Commission of the SNS Interterritorial Council, has approved a report warning of the risks of smoking electronic cigarettes."According to the report, prepared by the Ministry and the autonomous communities, the electronic cigarette aerosol contains carcinogenic substances, which implies a long-term risk in its consumption and exposure.
It also warns of different short-term health effects , such as the disease described as EVALI (pulmonary lesions associated with vaping) in the United States ", explained the Councilor for Health and Public Health of the City of Cieza, Francisco Saorín, in a press release."Scientific evidence from recent years discredits the idea based on a 2014 article that suggested that electronic cigarettes have an 80% lower risk than traditional tobacco," he stressed. The mayor has stressed that the report also highlights that there is no solid evidence that electronic cigarettes are useful as tools to quit smoking.
On the contrary, there is more evidence every day of the short and long-term toxicity of these devices, which diminishes their interest as a substitute tool for traditional tobacco, potentially contributing to the maintenance or initiation of nicotine addiction.
Thus, there is a risk that people who want to quit smoking will lose the opportunity by switching to these products. The document also collects the results of the latest surveys, which show that half of high school students have tried electronic cigarettes at some point.
The increase in its consumption in adolescents and young people is due to the low perception of risk they have in front of them.
They have been shown to be the gateway to nicotine addiction and smoking. Therefore, the report concludes that progress should continue in the regulation of this type of products to limit access by young people, avoiding the harmful effect of their advertising and promotion.Saorín has warned that this report updates the information in the previous document, published in 2014, since it includes new independent studies published in recent years, considering, among other aspects, the health effects caused by electronic cigarettes, what are their patterns of consumption among young people and the adult population and the weight of evidence on its effectiveness as an aid to quit smoking.Likewise, the councilor has stopped in that the work has taken into account the recent report of the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) of the European Commission on electronic cigarettes, in addition to the positioning and publications of the different scientific societies , both at national and European level, of the National Committee for Smoking Prevention (CNPT), of the WHO and of different health authorities and institutions.Saorín has stated that the report is in line with the consensus document adopted in February 2018, by agreement in the Public Health Commission of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS), on electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products. Finally, the mayor has specified that the document shows concern about the increase in the consumption of these devices among the youngest, constituting the gateway to nicotine addiction and smoking.
