The pain of a society that cracks with each macho murder (26/11/2020)

The international days currently commemorated by the United Nations help to understand and interpret the complex world we live in, illuminating society and influencing people's attitudes.

The mission is complicated when we must examine the darkest episodes of that society.

Any community marked by the scourge of sexist violence has to decide what to remember, and how to do it.

Individual memory is one thing, but collective memory transcends generations and helps define the character of a society.

The International Day Against Gender Violence plays a critical role in the construction of collective memory; in this case, directing the gaze of a country towards a scourge that perhaps it would prefer to forget. And it is that machismo has shaped almost all aspects of Spanish life throughout the 20th century.Forty-four empty chairs with a purple bow in the center of the Plaza de España.

This shocking image makes sense in the context of a criminal reality that has claimed the lives of 41 women and 3 children so far this year.

There is no doubt that the placement of this symbol in a prominent place in the city as a tribute by citizens to the victims of this social scourge is a success.

Despite the fact that the data continue to draw a reality tinged in black, there is an increasing commitment from society to end sexist violence.

Proof of this was this Wednesday the simple act of the International Day against Violence against Women,The organization of which, conditioned by the pandemic, was carried out by the Department of Women and Equality in collaboration with the Center for Specialized Attention to Women Victims of Gender Violence (CAVI of Cieza Vega Alta). The commitment and awareness of society against this pitiful scourge grows year after year.

This was revealed to the media by the Councilor for Women and Equality, Melba Miñano, while recalling all the women killed at the hands of their partners or ex-partners, victims that should be remembered throughout the year.

Miñano raised the need to go hand in hand with men and women in the fight against sexist violence.

"Much remains to be done, because we cannot tolerate a single woman suffering the drama of mistreatment and seeing her aggressor end her life." Before, the municipal official deposited a bouquet of flowers with the Councilor for General Administration, María Jesús Moreno, at the foot of the monolith in memory of the victims of gender violence. The mayor of the Municipal Corporation, Laura Villa, also wanted to support the event with her presence. It was yesterday when a wooden bench was also installed alluding to this international commemoration in the vicinity of the monolith.

Miñano, at the conclusion of the event under the watchful eye of the technical staff of his municipal area and of the Center for Specialized Attention to Women Victims of Gender Violence, approached the interior of the Plaza de España where forty-four corresponding empty chairs were placed to the 41 women and 3 children murdered so far this year.

At that time, the councilor for the Treasury, Antonio Ignacio Martínez-Real, joined the small group of authorities.

The day concluded with the telematic reading of the manifesto by the mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, and the virtual march to repudiate gender violence.

The alderman said that "We cannot condone these behaviors in our society and we need to unite at all levels to fight this scourge.
