The Councilor for Consumption, Health and Public Health of the City of Cieza has warned that childhood obesity "especially affects the most vulnerable families."According to a statement, "less than two months ago data that is of national concern was made public.
It is that every four out of ten children between the ages of 6 and 9 suffers from some type of excess weight and that this problem is twice as serious in families with fewer resources, an income of less than 18,000 euros, than in families with more resources, with an income of more than 34,000 euros.
"Thus, the Councilor for Consumption, Health and Public Health of the City Council of Cieza, Francisco Saorín, as a result of the data on childhood obesity, has declared that "we are facing a complex and serious social problem, due to the number of people affected, because it has to do with the future and because childhood obesity is a risk factor for being obese in adulthood and this, in turn, a risk factor that worsens the prognosis of many conventional diseases, including Covid-19 ".Likewise, the mayor explained that "childhood obesity has to do with social phenomena such as consumption patterns, physical exercise and with that Mediterranean diet of which we are all very proud but which is being lost for multiple reasons, so the approach has to be comprehensive, a complex approach ".Saorín has reported that the Ministry of Consumption, headed by Alberto Garzón, "has prepared a complete pack, which contains a front labeling that will be approved in the coming months, so that when anyone goes to the supermarket they can have a graphically, as with energy efficiency for example in household appliances, you can visualize with a color gradient from red to green if the product to choose is of a healthier or less healthy nature ".Likewise, the mayor has referred to the importance of children's advertising, noting that it is very important to modify the PAOS code (Code of Self-regulation of Food Advertising) that "unfortunately is not working and, therefore, children's advertising is a a vector by which childhood obesity is also growing remarkably "."Awareness campaigns, information campaigns of all kinds and also tax incentives for healthy consumer products and tax disincentives for unhealthy consumption, to which we are sending a signal through the price that according to science this type of repeated consumption over time worsens the prognoses of a healthy future in our life ".Finally, Saorín has declared that fundamentally "it is about changing the mentality because we have fought against childhood obesity for a long time, progress has been made, but in recent years we have stagnated and therefore the collaboration of all administrations is required public because it is a national problem that has to do with health, especially of the most vulnerable people and families with fewer resources.
