The waters of the Basin Mediterranean State Society (Acuamed) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, has organized informative talks on bats in several schools in the municipality of Cieza (Murcia), in collaboration with Tragsa and the association Iberian Wildlife.
The aim of these talks was to present part of the developed works within the performance of environmental recovery of the Segura River in Cieza, executed by Acuamed, and the installation of nest boxes for bats included in the riverside Safe.
During the works more than 50 nest boxes exclusively for bat species in the area, counted for implementation and selection of locations with the collaboration of biologists in this mammal and belonging to the Wildlife Iberian association, which since have been installed time comes to divulging the important role that bats develop in ecosystems where they are.
The conference, designed for children in third and fourth grade (ages 8 and 10 years old), have developed very successful, opening an interesting debate in the groups of schoolchildren to learn the incredible capabilities and features of this mammal, so unknown to most of the population and their amazing flight capabilities that provide hands-wings, night echolocation using or the wide variety of different species that exist and that one in four mammal species is family bats.
LOCATED IN DIFFERENT SPECIES ONCE CIEZA
In the municipality of Cieza they have been found 11 different species of bats, although it is estimated that there could be some more undetected for the moment.
During the talks have highlighted the important contribution of bats in the elimination and control of insects (mosquitoes consume about 600 each day) and status of protected species in Spain.
The conference also held aim to involve the population in the maintenance, preservation and understanding of the role of nest boxes installed, providing information on what they are, their operation and construction.
