The works include a network of pipes leading to side branches that will divert water from the canal to the plots through the installation of 58 irrigation outlets
The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, and the Mayor of Cieza, Antonio Tamayo, today laid the foundation stone for development works of the canal of the pools in the stretch between the Iron Bridge and Trail Morcillo in the town of Cieza, which will involve an investment of 2.4 billion euros.
The owner of Agriculture and Water said: "These works will primarily benefit the Community of Irrigators of the Acequia in the Pools", which has 956 members and an irrigable area of 266 hectares, of which 25 percent will benefit from the side branches which includes the project for upgrading the water infrastructure.
The works also encourage irrigators of the Commonwealth of Serrana-Albares that "feed on the canal from puddles where the water comes to them currently in low quality," said Cerda.
The Minister of Agriculture and Water explained that this action will solve a "historical problem" in the town of Cieza, as he said, "the conditions under which is the ditch is quite poor, especially in the section in which carry out development works, which defines the town's agricultural zone garden.
The project is to divert the canal to agricultural land thereby "relieve the situation of improving irrigation water distribution and avoiding losses," said the counselor.
The works include a network of pipes leading to side branches that will divert water from the canal to the plots by installing irrigation of 58 shots.
Responsible for Agriculture said that this work "definitely made good the damage and loss of water that continually suffers the ditch", with consequent problems for irrigators and for the road traffic that travels on a frequent basis through this area.
