The SMS will be assuming the attention of the socio-sanitary residences in the Region, within the project of improvement of pharmaceutical care to these institutions
The health area of ​​the Vega Alta del Segura, whose reference hospital is the 'Lorenzo Guirao' of Cieza, has started the project of pharmaceutical care to the nursing homes.
Specifically, this service has begun for the 40 residents of the Occupational Center Los Olivos de Cieza.
The forecast of economic savings is estimated between 40 and 50 percent with this system.
This initiative is framed in the project of implantation of the pharmaceutical attention in sociosanitary centers promoted by the General Direction of Planning, Investigation, Pharmacy and Attention to the Citizen of the Ministry of Health, the General Direction of Sanitary Assistance of the Murcian Health Service (SMS ) and the Murciano Institute of Social Action (IMAS).
The purpose is to guarantee the attention in this area to this population as established by the Regional Law of Pharmaceutical Management.
The purpose of this project is to maintain the supply of medicines and health products through the start-up, operation and management in the aforementioned center of a drug store linked to the Pharmacy Service of the Area located in the 'Lorenzo Guirao' hospital.
The general objective of this initiative is to improve pharmaceutical care for residents and ensure the rational use of medicine with the consequent optimization of the expenditure financed by the SMS, which will gradually assume this care in the socio-sanitary residences of the Region of Murcia in an ambitious project to improve pharmaceutical care for these patients.
To this end, the Pharmacy Service of the Area, in collaboration with the residence, assumes the acquisition, distribution and dispensing of medicines, enteral nutrition and other sanitary material, such as dressings for wounds, from the socio-health center.
With this, the most appropriate and optimal use of drugs in residents is guaranteed, and information on their use to the staff of the residence.
Advantages of the system
The establishment of a unit dose dispensing and controlled kits in the nursing homes optimizes the use of medicines.
Likewise, it rationalizes its purchase and administration, avoids its accumulation and expiration, at the same time that it allows to carry out a continuous pharmaceutical control, to diminish the adverse effects of the medication, to improve the safety of the patients and to increase the quality of care.
These patients are especially sensitive to medication and need it to be adjusted and controlled, also taking into account the interactions between drugs, since many of them are polymedicated, in order to avoid risks.
The final result is a better clinical control of residents with fewer side effects and a greater therapeutic effect.
To be able to carry out the project, it was necessary an investment in material resources for the storage of medicines, dispensing carts and human resources, with the expansion of a pharmacist's area specialist and a pharmacy technician in the health area .
