The Community, the City of Cieza and Dalkia signed an agreement to develop the first biomass plant in the Region (27/09/2010)

The Minister of Universities and Research Company, Salvador Marín, the Mayor of Cieza, Antonio Tamayo, and the CEO of the multinational firm Dalkia, Philippe Enaud, today signed an agreement Cieza construction of a plant to generate electricity from 100,000 tonnes per year of waste biomass from the pruning of fruit trees and bush that can produce electricity for 25,000 homes.

The Agreement sets out the studies to be run to verify the technical and economic feasibility of what would be the first industrial plant biomass in the region.

This investment has a clear innovative and sustainable because it reduces carbon dioxide emissions, waste reused and it contributes to the prevention of fires, as well as the generation of wealth to increase investment, create jobs and produce clean energy within the strategy of betting on the productive economy of the regional government.

This initiative arises from the work carried out, with a priority in the past year, the Directorate General of Industry, Energy and Mines, Regional Agency for Energy Management in the Region of Murcia (Argema) and the consistory ciezano to know production capacity of biomass in the area of Cieza and the Northwest.

These studies indicate a biomass estimated capacity of 100,000 tons per year, which together with the Plan for Attracting Investment in the Region, has helped the company Dalkia, Veolia Environnement group, Europe's leading multinational energy efficiency services, has considered the region, in particular Cieza, as a priority destination of investment for the possible construction of a biomass industry of 16 megawatts.

Marín said that "the steps taken by the Community's energy mix, innovation and renewable energies such as biomass, along with the support of the City of Cieza and cooperatives in the area and regional government confidence in innovative sectors, have Dalkia may take a decisive step to achieve what would be the industry's first biomass power generation in the region. "

Technical studies

The agreement provides for the conduct of studies to analyze the terms of use and the characteristics of the biomass of Cieza and the Northwest District, the design of adequate logistics for the collection, transport, packaging and storage of plant waste and biomass assessment.

Also, Murciano Argema and Research Institute and Agricultural Development and Food, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, will discuss energy crop species best adapted to the region and offer a higher return for the production of solid biomass.

"The completion of these studies will determine the technical and economic feasibility of the industrial plant planned by Dalkia, the execution would be an important investment in the region and creating jobs and extra income for farmers and benefits for the productive regional, "said the counselor.

Estimates of the project, for which the municipality would yield a plot of between 20,000 and 40,000 square meters Argema provide for the creation of 300 jobs and solve an environmental problem that affects agricultural entrepreneurs and freelancers, because existing statutory limitations for disposal of yard trimmings or varietal change by burning them.

"With the installation of this innovative industry able to eliminate this problem in the agricultural sector and enhance energy area such waste with a capacity of 16 megawatts of clean electricity," he said Marin.

Dalkia has developed in recent years, different experiences of use of primary biomass to a significant investment in R + D + i on specific processes for the utilization of forest wood and agricultural residues.

On the other hand, the group has extensive experience in this field, as it manages 251 biomass plants around the world representing an output of more than 1,300 megawatts.
