The Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Mayor of Cieza, Antonio Tamayo, today announced the proposed conversion of the former municipal landfill in a large Forest Regional Botanic than 66,500 square meters and about 200 species of plants.
José Ballesta remarked that this project "to settle a debt with the environment, converting the former landfill, sealed in 2005 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, in a space intended for the protection of plant biodiversity of our region."
Botanical Forest project will materialize in the creation of a valuable ecosystem available to all citizens, and has been designed to become a tool for environmental education.
Thus, the 200 plant species are marked with their respective information panels and the space has been conceived as a large living room intended for scientific study of indigenous biodiversity, the importance of rational use of water and ecological balance.
Meadows of wild flowers and a pond
The new ecosystem will have a 'wild forest' with different native species (palms, figs and pine.) Prairie flowers (poppies, daisies, bluebells and daisies), herbs (rosemary, thyme or santonin), natural hedges a wild pond.
The wildlife pond is proposed as a strategic enclave in the center of the forest, which, according to the counselor, "will enrich the fauna and flora of the ecosystem itself, as well as an excellent space for shelter and reproduction of amphibians."
The bill also establishes guidelines for the management and design of the Forest Botanist, both access and the different routes and the distribution of plantations.
Also, a substantial part of it is to improve soil substrate with topsoil enriched and expanded to 70 centimeters in thickness.
The drafting of an investment of 40,000 euros, which were supported by 75 percent by the Ministry of Public Works and Planning, while the Municipality of Cieza has provided the remaining 25 percent.
