The cultivation of seedless varieties tends to increase because it is profitable and generates many jobs in the field and in storage
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, through the District Agricultural Office (OCA) of Cieza, conducted a study of table grape growers of this county to evaluate the reduction of between 15 and 25 percent of irrigation and paid, and check if that is not affected production and coloring of the grapes.
The initiative aims to achieve, among other things, saving water and fertilizer to be compatible with optimum production.
The Director General of Agro-Food Industry and Agricultural Training, Lidón Angel Garcia stressed that the Regional Office of Cieza sent monthly over 500 personalized communications to farmers fertigation recommendations for different crops, from stone fruit to vine.
In this regard, he stressed "the important work done by the technicians of the regional offices who are walking the ground, in direct contact with farmers, and attentive to their demands."
This is the case of Jesus Perez Fernandez, technical responsible for management of table grapes in the above OCA since 1997, adding that there have been several studies and tests on parcels of grapes seedless (seedless), showing that there may be scope for reduce irrigation and fertilizer, without this implying a decline in production.
Production and varieties
The Murcia region has about 5,500 acres devoted to the production of table grapes.
The main producing areas are Guadalentín Valley and Las Vegas Medium and High.
71 percent of production is for seedless varieties, geared mostly for export.
The seedless varieties, in general, naturally, tend to produce larger clusters, with large numbers of berries but with a small size.
When cultivation was introduced in the region many farmers, and other measures of cultivation, increased the amount of fertilizer to increase the size of the berries.
However, it was found that excess paid higher growth causes increasing vegetative shading of the vines, which in turn influences the color of the grapes.
In the case of the variety Crimson Seedless, one of the most widespread, if it does not reach its characteristic red or grains are partly colored, can depreciate commercially.
Excess paid also favors the emergence of pests and diseases.
Finally, it can result in contamination of aquifers by excess nitrates.
This demonstrates the need to optimally adjust the amounts of water and fertilizer, depending on growth stage, bearing in mind that the cultivation of seedless varieties tends to increase because it is profitable and generates many jobs both in the field and in store.
Launch Partners
The experience of reducing irrigation and fertilization takes place in five plots of Crimson Seedless variety, belonging to agricultural enterprises in the region.
This work also involved Peter Fernandez, technical irrigation and fertilization of the District Agricultural Office of the Ministry in Cieza.
Lidón Garcia concluded that the Agricultural Regional Offices "have qualified technicians who advise on an experimental basis obtained in the areas of the region where they work and are fundamental in the transmission of knowledge and technology transfer to farmers."
