The national deputy of the PP by Murcia and member of the Committee on Agriculture, Food and Environment in Congress, Teodoro Garcia, has asked the central government to support the designation of origin Cieza Peach, both for obtaining this flag to commercial introduction in international markets.
Garcia, who this week presented a non-legislative proposal through the parliamentary group for discussion of this issue in the Committee on Agriculture, stated that "this initiative, which will be discussed in the coming weeks, will strengthen the competitiveness of our agriculture and Mark Spain, which in this case is associated with high quality products. "
And, as explained, "the peach Cieza has characteristics that make it unique compared to any other similar product, under both the influence of the river Segura is in these lands as a climate is cold in winter and warm in spring, conditions that facilitate the production of high quality fruit organoleptic ".
"Some say the historical studies of Cieza peach grown at least since the third century, shows the existence of an ancient tradition in this area of ​​Spain that we are obliged to protect and add value," added Garcia, who also highlighted the high degree of specialization of the Spanish East farmers.
The municipality of Cieza is currently the largest peach producer in Europe and employs around 10,000 people directly or indirectly in the whole region.
Meanwhile, Peach is the main irrigated crop in the Region of Murcia, exceeding 250,000 tons of product with an area occupied by the fruit of more than 14,000 hectares in the region.
As data gives a good account of the importance which is the region of Cieza in this regard, it is noteworthy that more than half of the total cultivated area and more than 70 percent of the total harvest of peaches are in this region.
