The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, today urged the peach industry to "promote policy innovation and technological improvement as a tool for competitiveness", at the close of the technical conference "Innovation and Commercialization, key to the future of the field ', held today in Cieza.
The owner of Agriculture said that "Cieza is the peach capital" and recalled that the Region of Murcia has an area of 14,000 hectares for this crop, of which "half are located in this area."
Murcia Councilor improvement projects highlighted in peach production driven by the Ministry, through the Instituto Murciano Agricultural Development and Food (Imide) since 1973.
So, he cited lines of ecological adaptation and development of new varieties, clonal selection and study of the optimal dosage of irrigation and its impact on product quality.
During his speech, the Minister highlighted the "strength and resilience of agro-food sector", an activity he described as "modern and strategic" because he added, "does not destroy jobs, but creates it, and does not decrease but the billing increases. "
In this regard, said that this activity is powerful and rich "because, he said," employs more than 140,000 people, nearly a quarter of the total population occupied Murcia and generates an economic value of 3,500 million euros "according to information provided yesterday by the sector in the conference 'The agricultural sector in the Region of Murcia: a permanent value."
