A total of 35 students in the Environmental Sciences, University of Murcia recently visited the Hall of Nature 'The Watchtower' located in the town of Cieza, to complete their practical training in this area.
The main purpose of the visit was that the students, accompanied by Professor of Environmental Education, Mercedes Jaén, could see first hand the working methods of the Performance Program Natural Heritage Network developed in the classrooms of Nature in the Region of Murcia, as well as participate in various workshops.
The director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernández, offered to the University of Murcia the possibility of extending this collaboration to the next course, since "Red Classroom is a landmark of environmental education in the Region of Murcia and constantly growing. "
The proposed network of classrooms of Nature was launched in 2005, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and the accession of many municipalities.
According to Pablo Fernandez, that network includes two main objectives: "to provide a permanent educational resource to the school community and maintain an open line of interpretation to improve the management of protected natural areas of the Community."
The courses offered by this network is done through workshops and classrooms and environmental education campaigns.
Classrooms and workshops are located in protected natural areas in the municipalities of Murcia, Cartagena, Yecla, Cieza, Caravaca de la Cruz, Totana, Calasparra, Puerto Lumbreras, San Pedro del Pinatar and Fortuna.
These facilities are visited by groups of students over several days or one day.
They can learn and enjoy contact with nature, discovering the physical environment, landscape, biodiversity and wildlife characteristic of the area, with the help special educators.
In the case of environmental education campaigns, environmental educators are those who go to schools and colleges, teachers' request to give talks and organize participatory activities, audiovisual support.
According to Pablo Fernandez, in this academic year 2008-2009 the educational offerings of the Web "has moved beyond", and invited to participate not only the school community, but also to groups, associations or other organized groups in new campaigns Environmental Education.
In 2008 more than 41,000 students participated in the Network Programme Classrooms of the Nature of the Region of Murcia.
Of these 23,000 visited the natural protected areas to attend the classrooms and workshops located there, and 18,000 participated in their own schools and institutes in the School of Environmental Education Campaign developed by environmental educators to the scheme.
